Official Websites: To Be Or Not to Be?

On July 8, the Council for Informational Society Development was discussing a number of actual issues addressing online access to information and official websites. Meanwhile, Europe seems to begin considering reduction of state informational resources.

Since 2005, when the Dzerzhinsky district court of St.-Petersburg obliged federal executive government bodies to launch their official websites and to update them regularly, the official part of .ru Internet zone is developing actively. Since July 1, 2010, Internet users have got access to numerous websites publishing information on activities of Russian courts.

New virtual resources, says President Dmitry Medvedev, should “shorten distances and provide equal access to services for everyone over the country. In fact, an integrated virtual space without any barriers, covering the whole Russian Federation, should be formed”.

Meanwhile, British authorities are planning to close most official websites due to low traffic and expensiveness. This is expected to help most visited and efficient online resources to improve their functionality, says Cnews.ru

Russia often shares international experience in the field of informatization. Less state online resources – can be a sound idea, taking into account that quality of Russian official web resources often leaves a lot to be desired.
