The Katyn Case: The Same Old Scary Story?

On July 13, 2010, the Moscow City Court once more examined the case on unlawfully classified materials addressing execution of Polish military service people near Katyn during the World War II. The Memorial Society, in particular, demands to declasify the statement of the Chief Military Prosecutor’s Office (2004) terminating investigation of the Katyn case.

As for official structures, some of their statements at the last court hearings appear to contradict documents provided and actions performed by the same structures earlier. On July 13, only one question was examined: who classified the coduments – and no answer has been obtained.

The next hearing is scheduled for August 3.

We should remind that in April 2010, declassification of the Katyn case documents and their publication at the official website of the Federal Archive Agency began, prenentiously announced and advertised. But the Polish side, having got familiar with the newly published information, states that no new unique data has been disclosed. Is the most interesting information still stored under the secrecy stamp?

Scans of some information requests and official letters (in Russian) are available at the Russian page.
